How to Clear Copier Paper Jams Safely

A step-by-step method for clearing jams without tearing rollers or sensors.

Work with the paper path, not against it

Always pull jammed sheets in the direction the paper was traveling. Pulling backwards drags toner across rollers and can tear the trailing edge, leaving fragments that trip sensors for days.

Open every door the panel names

Machines report the first sensor that noticed the problem, not always where the sheet stopped. Check the tray, the vertical transport, the fuser exit and the duplexer before closing up.

Look for the cause, not just the sheet

One jam is paper. Three jams in a week is a worn pickup roller, a mis-set paper guide, humidity in the stack, or a media weight the tray was never designed for.

When to stop and call

Stop if you see torn fragments you cannot reach, a sheet wrapped around the fuser, or any burning smell. Those repairs cost far less than the damage caused by forcing them.
